TRHD May 2020 Release- Buggy for Caffeine

Hey Everyone! I am completely bugging out over here, and so excited to be kicking off the first day of Inspiration Hops for The Rabbit Hole Designs’ May 2020 Release! Be sure to stick around to the end of the blog post for instructions on how you can enter the May Release giveaway!

Today, I am sharing a project with you that I made using the new set from The Rabbit Hole Designs, Buggy for Caffeine! This set is part of the May 2020 Release and is available for purchase today!

Before I get into this project, I want to talk about how much I am in love with this new set! The Rabbit Hole Designs’ Caffeinated Critters are always such a huge hit, and I was so excited when I saw this set because it is the FIRST Caffeinated set that is a 4″ x 6″! It includes 3 super fun and super sleepy bugs just waiting to use all of their multiple arms and legs to hold as many coffee cups as possible. There are also a handful of really fun sentiments that fit these buggers so perfectly!

Now onto the project!

For today’s project, I decided to feature the adorably sleepy ant included with the Buggy for Caffeine set. My inspiration for selecting the ant actually came from me looking at the new Broken Glass stencil (also a part of the May 2020 release!). I knew that this stencil lent itself to so many different beautiful color combinations to blend over it, but I saw something different: an ant hill! So, I took this idea and ran with it.

I decided to color my ant from Buggy for Caffeine with some earthy red Copic Markers, because I wanted there to be a few little pops of color. I fussy cut my ant and set them aside.

I also took the sentiment “C-Ant before coffee” (because, let’s be honest, it couldn’t be more perfect), heat embossed it in white on brown cardstock, and turned it into a framed sentiment strip. I then set that aside.

Now, for the rest of my pieces, I needed a 4.125″ x 5.375″ piece of white cardstock, a 4.125″ long grassy die cut of green paper, and a 4.875″ x 4.125″ piece of craft cardstock. I also took an A2-sized piece of brown cardstock which would be used to frame the final result.

First, I took my white cardstock piece and used blue Distress Oxide ink to blend a sky. I only ink blended about the top 1.5″ of the panel because the rest would be covered up. I also took the grassy border piece of green cardstock and inked up the bottom portion of the grass in dark green in to give it a little bit of dimension.

For my craft cardstock, I tacked down my Broken Glass stencil on top, and took a dark brown ink and went over the top. I only used 1 color of ink, but didn’t apply it entirely evenly. I knew this would give me all the earthy tones that I needed. I also wasn’t going after that ombré look that I usually do, so I knew the uneven application would work.

Once I removed my Broken Glass stencil, I had such a fun little underground scene going. But I wanted to add a little more detail. So I did something I rarely doin my projects: free-hand drawing. I took a super fine point black pen and added in little ants in my tunnels! Now, I apologize in advance if some of them may not immediately look like ants. I wanted to keep them small, and it can get hard to put detail into super small spaces. But I knew they would read as ants!

Next it was time to put everything together. I adhered my grassy die towards the top of my white cardstock panel (where I blended a partial sky). Then, I adhered my ant tunnel panel. I placed my ant and my sentiment on foam tape and added them onto my card as well, and adhered the whole piece onto an A2-sized card base.

To finish this card off, I put a few sequins for embellishment, and added one tiny any on the “surface”, drawing them directly onto my grassy die cut piece.

  1. Perfect Ant hill stencil to match up with this fun ant!! LOVE your card and creativity to make us all the inspiration we need!

    1. Thank you!! I try to think outside of the box. One of the first things this stencil made me think of was a stained glass window, but I wanted to think of it as something a little different!
