Spring Celebrations Blog Hop- Cinco De Mayo Luchador Card

Hey, everyone! I am so happy to be back with some of my favorite crafty people today for a new edition of the Crafty Festival Blog Hop! Today is the first in the new Spring Celebration series, and today we are celebrating Cinco De Mayo!

When this theme was announced, I did my usual “inventory” of my craft supplies (ok, more like me flipping through each individual set). I came across my Kindred Stamps- Travel to Mexico stamp set, and there was this adorable luchador. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, a luchador is someone who participates in Lucha Libre, or Mexican Professional Wrestling!

I colored up my luchador wrestler in a springy-like color palette using my Copic markers:

  • Skin: E0000, E15, E13, E11, E00
  • Suit Blues: BG11, BG13, BG15
  • Suit Yellows: Y11, Y13, Y15
  • Shoes: BG13, BG15, BG18
  • Teeth: C00

I fussy cut my luchador out and set him to the side.

Next, for my background, I wanted something that reminded me of wrestling, and for whatever reason, the bursts from my Kindred Stamps You’re Super Stencil spoke to me the most. I cut a piece of white cardstock down to 4.125″ x 5.375″, and began blending the burst cutouts with either Mustard Seed and Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide Ink. There were some larger gaps between my bursts that I wanted to fill, so there were some tiny star cutouts in the same stencil, so I went in and used those stars to fill in gaps. I finished this panel off my splattering it in Fun Stampers Journey Sparkle Silk, and then flicking some watered-down Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide Ink from a ratty old watercolor brush (I’ve found this is what actually works best, rather than a higher quality water brush). I set this panel aside to dry.

From the You’re Super stencil, there was also a cut out of a speech bubble I wanted to use. So I blended that cut out with Mustard Seed Distress Oxide Ink onto white scrap cardstock, and fussy cut it out with a thin white border. I then stamped the sentiment “have a smashing day” into the speech bubble with Peacock Feather Distress Oxide Ink.

Now I was in the home stretch and it was time to start piecing my card together.

I took a piece of peacock colored cardstock and cut out an A2-sized panel. I adhered my ink-blended panel to this piece so my ink-blended panel had a nice frame. I then took that same colored peacock cardstock, and adhered my speech bubble cut out with the sentiment to it. I fussy cut my bubble out so it now also had a nice peacock-colored border to it as well.

I adhered my luchador and my sentiment bubble together so they overlapped, and then used foam tape on the back to adhere them to my card. I took some yellow and teal sequins from 2 past Kindred Stamps shaker packs and adhered them to my project.

I mounted my panel on an A2-sized card base and was done!
